This air fryer apple crisp is delicious and one of my favorite sweet treats. One of the best things about making apple crisp in an air fryer is the lack of mess. All the ingredients are cooked in one baking dish which makes for easy cleanup.

This recipe is also incredibly easy to make and kid-approved. It requires only a few simple ingredients, including apples, oats, butter, cinnamon, and sugar. Serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the perfect end-of-the-meal dessert.

Why you will love this recipe!

    • Easy and mess-free: One of the great things about this air fried apple crisp is how easy it is to make. The baking dish goes directly into the air fryer, so there are fewer dishes to clean.
    • Kid-friendly: Sweet cinnamon apples topped with a crunchy crust and served with delicious ice cream. Kids will love it!
    • Simple Ingredients: You only need 6 ingredients to make it, and most of them you probably already have in your pantry and fridge.
    • Dietary info: Apple crisp, just like all other fruit crisps, is naturally vegetarian.

    Ingredients

    Filling

    • Apples: You can use the variety of apples you prefer.
    • Sugar: I used brown sugar for the filling too for a richer flavor.
    • Cinnamon: Apples and cinnamon are a match made in heaven so cinnamon is a MUST in this recipe.

    Topping

    • Brown Sugar: Brown sugar will add a caramel-like flavor compared to regular sugar.
    • Oats: You can use either rolled or old-fashioned oats for a crispy outcome.
    • Flour: All-Purpose flour works well for this recipe, you can use whole wheat or gluten-free too.
    • Butter: Unsalted butter works best in the topping. Use cold butter to get a clumpy and crunchy topping.

    Recipe Variations

You can turn this recipe into any type of air fryer fruit crisp, just swap the apples with your favorite fruit like pears, peaches, strawberries, and so on.

If you need a gluten-free version you can simply use gluten-free flour in the topping and it will be just as delicious!

A vegan apple crisp is also possible by using plant-based butter in the topping.

    Frequently Asked Questions

You don't have to peel the apples but the texture is much more pleasing when using peeled apples.

What are the best apples to use in a crisp?

You can use your favorite variety of apples. Honeycrisp and Granny Smith are the most common choice, along with Golden Delicious and Gala apples.

What's the difference between a crisp and a crumble?

The difference is mainly in the topping. A crisp usually has oats, while a crumble is simple flour, butter, and sugar.

    Serving Suggestions

The best addition to a plate of piping hot air fryer apple crisp is a scoop of delicious vanilla ice cream.

You can also serve it with creamy vanilla custard or whipped cream for an indulgent dessert.

    Make ahead, storage and reheating

Once cooked, the fruit crisp will keep well, covered in the fridge for up to 3 days. You can enjoy it cold, or, reheat it in the air fryer at 360F / 180c for 5 minutes to warm it through.

This air fryer dessert is also freezer-friendly, which means that you can make it ahead of time and store it in the freezer until you're ready to serve. After baking, let it cool, then wrap it in foil and place it in a freezer bag. It will keep well for up to 6 months.

For best results, thaw the crisp before reheating in the air fryer.

    Recipe Notes and Tips

    • Use cold butter and cut it into small cubes before adding it to the other topping ingredients. Using room-temperature butter would cause the topping to spread out and flatten when baked.
    • To make sure the apples get cooked thoroughly, it's important to air fry this crisp in 2 steps, first the apples alone, then the full crisp with the topping.
    • You can easily turn this air fryer apple crisp into a gluten-free or vegan dessert by swapping the flour and butter in the topping.
