Recipe Variations
You can use this blueberry shake recipe with other berries like strawberries or raspberries, or a blend of a couple of fruits. It's also great with some banana added.
The maple syrup is optional, but blueberries aren't too sweet, so I feel that it really enhances the flavor. You can also use honey or another sweetener.
I like to use whole milk for a really creamy drink, but you can use any other dairy milk. You can also use oat milk, almond milk, or other plant based milks if that's what you have to hand.
Make Ahead and Storage
These homemade milkshakes are best enjoyed as soon as they are made. If they sit for too long, the blueberries can start to become jelly like due to the pectin in them.
Frequently Asked Questions
Personally, a milkshake is a treat, and should be enjoyed when it is extra creamy with whole milk and full fat ice cream. If you want to reduce the calories and fat, you can use skim milk and light ice cream. Swapping ice cream for Greek yogurt will also increase the protein content and lower the sugar.
This ratio of 1:1:1 for ice cream, milk and blueberries makes a thick but pourable shake. For a thicker shake, simply reduce the amount of milk added. For a thinner shake, add a little more.
Recipe Notes and Tips
- For best results, use a high speed blender to blend the milkshake.
- If using frozen blueberries, let them thaw a little first, just 5 to 10 minutes at room temperature, to soften them. Frozen blueberries can cause a slightly grainy texture, but they will still be good to eat.
- Drink immediately.
- This recipe makes 1 large or 2 smaller milkshakes.
