Now, don't get me wrong, I love me a good potato chip, but let's be honest, they aren't great to be snacking on endlessly! Next time you get a snack craving, make up a batch of these delicious air fryer plantain chips instead.

Getting an air fryer has totally elevated my snack game, it's so much quicker to make your own veggie chips, they come out super crispy and they are way quicker than making in the oven and lots healthier than deep frying.

Grab your air fryer and let's get going!

Why you will love this recipe!

    • Healthier: These chips contain all natural ingredients and they are a great healthy alternative to store bought potato chips. Because they are air fried, they come out nice and crispy without the need for lots of oil. Plantains are a great source of fiber and antioxidants, and are full of other essential vitamins and minerals.
    • Quick and easy: You just need four ingredients to make a batch of these and they are simple to prep and cook.
    • Dietary info: These air fryer plantain chips are vegan friendly and are low in fat and sodium. One serving is around 160 calories.

    Ingredients

    • Plantain: Use slightly green plantain for the best results. All green will work well, but they are harder to peel. Yellow or black plantain will be too soft to slice.
    • Oil: Use a high heat neutral oil to cook these fries, vegetable or canola will work well.
    • Seasonings: The plantain is seasoned with chili flakes and salt, simple, but very effective!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What's the best way to slice the plantain?

I sliced these chips with the slicer side on a box grater to get them nice and thin, and if you have a mandoline that will work really well. You can cut the plantain by hand, but cut it as thin as possible. The thinner the slices, the crispier your chips will be.

Can the plantain overlap in the air fryer basket?

I tried cooking these chips in one single layer and all together with the chips overlapping. In a single layer, the chips do cook quicker and you only have to flip them once, but you will have to cook lots of batches.

I found the quickest and easiest method was to put them all in at the same time, and flip them regularly, they still got nice and crispy all over and it means that you can cook up a big batch all at once.

Can you make them ahead of time?

These air fryer plantain chips are best enjoyed as soon as you have made them so that they are nice and crispy. They will still be good to eat later, but I find that after a few hours they start to get soft and chewy.

But don't worry, get the leftovers back to perfect crispy levels by popping them back in the air fryer at 400F for 2 to 3 minutes to crisp them right back up again!

You will need to allow time to soak the plantain slices in water. This removes excess starch so your chips are nice and crunchy.

    Recipe Variations

These air fried plantain chips are pretty spicy, so do decrease the amount of chili flakes if you are sensitive to heat, or, have a big glass of water next to you! You can easily mix up the seasonings too, black pepper, paprika or garlic powder will all work well.

    Recipe Notes and Tips

    • Different air fryer models can deliver different results. Because you need to flip the chips every couple of minutes, it's easy to cook them to your level of crispiness. Mine were perfect at 15 minutes.
    • Don't skip soaking the plantain slices in water. This is key to crispy chips.
    • Store the air fryer plantain chips in an airtight container. They will start to get soft, but you can get them nice and crispy in the air fryer again. 400F for 2 to 3 minutes will get them back to their crispy glory.
